Media Changing Views
The media can turn a big deal that was an “accident” into a mistake. Last year Terrell Owens was rushed to the hospital for an “accidental” overdose. Police thought he was trying to commit suicide but Terrell and his agent insist it was by accident. Terrell is off to one of his best starts in his career wants the “accident” to be washed away. This is the guy who yells at his coach and teammates when he isn’t happy and appears to be a very unstable man. Last year he didn’t have the year he wished he could have and was very upset. He also broke up with his fiancé who he was dating for three years and couldn’t see his son on his birthday. (http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/nfl#) This is the man that claims that this is an accident. He feels that it’s “not something I really want to be remembered for.” (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/football/cowboys/stories/092607dnspocowlede.2e97d9b.html)Owens leads the team in receiving this year and is playing phenomenal. He fired his personal trainer and had many off and on field problems. I feel that Owens simply used everything going on in his life as a scapegoat. He is one of the best receivers in the NFL. I think Owens can’t be happy with himself unless he is playing like he should be. Owens did have a lot going on in his life but can’t keep his composure when necessary. He is supposed to be one of the leaders on the team. His teammates can’t rely on him if he isn’t stable. They can’t rely on him if he can’t cope with his emotions. Owens needs to keep what goes on off the field aside from what happens with football. He can’t blame his problems on an accident or his relationship with his son. He is a great player but very unstable and seems like he has trust issues with himself. The media can really changed people’s perception of what happened, People really believe that it was a mistake. The media can’t fool everyone.

Lavin, I happen to agree with you on the fact that Terrell Owens might be using his personal life as an excuse for him not performing up to his standards. However this underperformance might have a little more to do with the fact that T.O. might be a tad bit overrated. Don't get me wrong T.O. was and still is one of the better recievers in the NFL in the past decade. But he is 33 and his best years may be behind him. He lead the league in drops last year and has become a distraction on every team he has ever played for. Sure he is off to a fast start this year but how long till it all blows up in his face again? Some people call this guy one of the greatest recievers ever. Does he really belong in the company of Jerry Rice, Steve Largent, or Cris Carter? I for one don't think so, T.O. may be one of the better recievers in the NFL, but I believe people get sucked in by all the hype surrounding him and make him out to be better than he really is.
I don’t really get what your main focus was in this post, but I do agree with several of your points. T.O. does always seem disgruntled when he or his team is performing badly. But you don’t mention that he completely flips to the other side of the spectrum when he is getting the bell and making plays. He turns into this great teammate, praising his coaches and peers for their great performance and decision making. In reality, most athletes don the same thing, but Owens takes everything to the extremes and he loves to bask in the spotlight that he gets from the media. I for one do not particularly like T.O. as a player because he seems to worry more about his own image than the teams overall success.
