Black QB's have higher standards

Philadelphia Eagles QB, Donovan McNabb, feel that "black quarterbacks face greater scrutiny than their white counterparts." He was on an HBO interview on "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" In his opinion he thinks that they have to something extra because there are so little of them.http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/nfl/09/18/mcnabb.ap/index.html?eref=mostpop There are 6 QB's that are black in the NFL. McNabb feels that he can throw for 300 yards and win by a touchdown and still get critiqued by analysts. McNabb compared the criticism that white QB's get and he feels it's nowhere close to what they get. I happen to disagree with Donovan. I think they he isn't having the type of year he wanted to so far and he is very frustrated. I think the media is picking on McNabb because he is an elite player and one of the best QB's in the NFL. The eagles are a very good team yet they are 0-2. I feel like the media is blaming Donovan because he is a huge part of the team and he isn't playing up to his par yet. Donovan is just making an excuse. He is a good player and can pick defenses apart. The fact that they are 0-2 really shows something. He needs to step up and admit to the fans, players, coaches and media that he isn’t playing as well as he should be and taking the blame like a leader. He is the one the team turns to when they need a big play. Big players make big plays at big times. Donovan hasn’t made any big players. He is the leader of the team and needs to lead them to a victory. Sorry Donovan but excuses aren’t going to work. Prove yourself on the football field, not on a TV show.

Quaterbacks in the NFL are all critiqued regardless of color. Quaterback is the most important, most glamorous position in all of sports and you need to have thick skin to play it. Sure Donovan has taken some shots from the media, but all quaterbacks do. Peyton Manning the BEST quaterback in the NFL was criticized for not being able to win big games or beat the Patriots. He didn't let it affect his game and he silenced his critics by winning the Super Bowl. Donovan needs to realize that its not his skin color thats getting him criticized, its the fact that his team isn't winning. Once the Eagles start to win the scrutiny won't be so intense and we won't hear this until the Eagles lose a couple games.

I agree with Lavin that McNabb is just frustrated about the season he is having. I mean you don't see other QB's coming out and speaking on this subject if they are having a few bad games, do you? What McNabb also has to take into account is that he plays in Philly. That city's fans are widely known for criticizing their star players. That plays a big factor as to why he is being critiqued so much. Charles Barkley recently said during the Eagles-Redskins Monday night football game that he was booed all the time by Philly fans even though he made 6 straight All-Star games. McNabb brought the Eagles to 4 NFC Championships and 1 Superbowl. He just isn't that kind of player anymore, and he has to realize it.

Lavin,I agree with you completely. The bottom line is that Donovan hasn't played up to his potential yet this season which has lead his team to a 0-2 start. He is obviously bothered and frustrated by this and is just looking for an excuse. As the qb on a struggling team you need to be a leader and accept your mistakes and your poor performance on the field and correct it. Donovan is a great leader and he is a great football player and he needs to start acting like it and take some responsiblity. He is a tremendous and very athletic quarterback so when he is not playing up to par he is going to get criticism not because the color of his skin but because of his performance. Donovan is better than that as a person and a leader for his team and he has proven it. He normally doesn't make excuses for himslef and takes the blame of his team's non success. Race has nothing to do with McNabb getting critisized it's simply the way he is performing on the gridiron. Donovan was the main reason why the Eagles appeared in a couple NFC championship games, winning an NFC title which lead to a super bowl appearance. So of course you are going to be critically analyzed when you have had this much success in the past and you aren't playing like you are capable of.This isn't about race but rather about a big time athlete not playing to his ability, and Donovan should understand that.

Lavin, I agree with you completely. The critiquing has nothing to do with McNabb being black. Take Rex Grossman for example. There is no doubt in my mind that he is the most critiqued QB in the NFL right now, game by game anyhow, and he is white. The media jumps on players who are leaders, or supposed to be leaders, of a good team that is struggling (i.e. Rex and Donovan). Just give it a few weeks when McNabb gets hot and he will be on the other end of the stick, getting praised for his play, and McNabb will forget about this whole incident.

If Donovan thinks what he is getting in Philly is bad he should try being the QB in Cleveland. Who who ever it is is most of the timed booed alot no matter how good they play. The fans either want a QB that has Peyton's stats or now they want to Brady Quin, but winning fixes everything now the fans as of right now like Anderson as QB. If Donovan was winning I don't think that there would be as much criticism for Donovan. Also leaders of teams should block out the critics and not listen to them they just want to bring him down. Since he is the leader of the team he should say I haven't played my best yet and go forward from there to try save what is left of the season.

I agree with the points you made in this blog. Donovan McNabb just cannot take the pressure of a regular QB no matter what color they are. First off Philadelphia fans are known to be very passionate about their sports and can easily turn on players for making bad plays. McNabb has been playing like crap the past two games and I’m sure Philly was letting him know about it. It is ironic that McNabb didn’t say these statements of added pressure until he was 0-2. If McNabb was telling the truth about added pressure to black quarterbacks then why don’t other black quarterbacks come out and talk about this pressure? I just think McNabb is feeling added pressure from Philadelphia and because this is his first season back from his knee injury and the expectations are high for him.
