Patriots: Great Yet Classless

The Patriots are arguably the best team in the National Football League but also arguably the team that has the least amount of class. They were beating the browns by seventeen with eleven seconds left of the game. The browns were trying to spike the ball so the clock would stop. Linebacker, Mike Vrabel, dove at the knees of left tackle, Joe Thomas, because he was trying to get the ball. Vrabel should’ve let the browns spike the ball and just worry about the next play. He clearly was going for an injury because he had to reason to dive at someone’s knees, especially when there isn’t a chance that he is going to get the ball. The browns guard, Eric Steinbach called Vrabel “classless” and said there is no reason to do what he did. http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/nfl. There is no reason to dive at the guys knees and also almost take out the quarterback with eleven seconds left, especially when the game is almost over. It just shows lack of character to try to hurt someone. Steinbach thought Vrabel's move was deliberate. http://www.vindy.com/content/sports/local_regional/292649284366461.php. The debate can be that he never heard the whistle, but this isn’t the first time he’s gotten unsportsmanlike conduct against the browns. It’s a cheap shot that should’ve never been done. The Patriots get looked at as one of the best teams in sports. They don’t need someone to start a reputation that they are also the least classy. This is going to be looked upon as a team that has potential to go undefeated but also doesn’t have character. It’s a shame what players do, especially when they’re winning, to rebel. Vrabel needs to prove to fans and the NFL that he does have class and that it was a mistake because as far as I’m concerned he’s a jerk!

Kevin, I agree with you on the fact that the Patriots don't show the class a team of their caliber should show. What Vrabel showed absolutley no class and could have seriously injured Joe Thomas. Any team that cheats like the Patriots did, lack a certain amount of class. Cheating isn't one of the things that comes to mind when you think of the word classy. Plus any team with Rodney Harrison on the roster loses a little bit of classiness. He is the most fined player in NFL history and is always mentioned in the dirtiest players in the NFL conversation. I think if the Patriots want to contend for the Super Bowl maybe they should start acting like champions.

I agree with you Lavin. If they are the best team in the NFL they should act like it too. I too saw that hit and thought to myself "You gotta be kidding me." I mean i hate the Browns but I don't want to see a guy get hurt off of a cheap shot. That is just not right. If it was my opinion i'd fine Vrabel for his actions. They are called "Professional" football players. In my opinion there is nothing "Professional" about some of the players. If they are professionals they should start acting like it because I am distigusted at some of these jerks.

Lavin I agree with you completely. I am not the biggest Patriots fan and I saw what happened and it was bad. Also in that game the Patriots were up 10 with 50 seconds to go and were trying to score. I mean it would have been much classier just to run the ball and get the game over with. But with the cheating thing and thinking they are better then everyone else makes them not a classy organizations. Yes I hate to say it but they are he best team in the NFL this year no questions. It’s not surprising that a lot of teams don't like the patriots. Another thing is you have to look at Rodney Harrison. Harrison just got suspended for taking illegal drugs. That looks very classless for a team. Who cares that they are the best team. There are so many other teams out there that have more class and are fun to watch.

I agree with you, Kevin. I also believe that the Patriots are currently one of the best teams in the NFL. They are looked at and judged by many people whether they are from New England or not. They are expected to have respectable players who you can look up to and use as role models.
Mike Vrabel wanted to win the game, but where do you cross the line between integrity and sportsmanship? He was trying to be competitive and win the game, but apparently the “drive” got the best of him. While Mike Vrabel played for the Steelers I always thought of him as a very respectable person on and off the field. He was very nice and played with much integrity. Now, it seems that his style of playing has gotten “dirty”. I think he should apologize for his brutal actions, but also people should remember, football is a vicious sport where the well being of players isn’t always considered.

Any team that gets caught cheating like the Pats did already have a little problem with class, but now you have the players being overly aggressive along with the staff. What Vrabel did was absolutely uncalled for, and I feel that he should receive some type of additional punishment. If the Pats are supposed to be so great they should put more pressure on their players to show more class and behave as they are expected to. Overall, the Pats should be looked at a bit more skeptically then they are, with "spy gate", Harrison's HGH use, and Vrabel's excess aggression.
